The first of a couple weeks of Valentine crafts: marble painting! Hazel is forever intrigued by book illustrations and wants to know if they are painted / drawn / whatever. She seemed mystified by cutting up a painting the first time I explained Eric Carle’s technique to her, so I’ve been waiting for an opportunity to incorporate something like it into one of her craft projects. After we talked about what she could do for her Valentines, she picked this – painting with marbles. We used some snow-day free time earlier in the week and she did several sheets of painted cardstock, which will get cut up and used as part of her treats for her friends at school and for the ones she’s sending out in the mail.
This holiday-loving-kiddo was pretty thrilled with this project! It was very simple – with loops of painter’s tape I secured two sheets of cardstock to an old baking sheet that has been relegated to craft projects. I sloshed marbles around in paint and plopped them onto the paper. Roll them around and repeat as needed – easy peasy! After a moment where marbles went flying from some overzealous tray-tipping, she decided that she might be better off pushing them around with a bamboo skewer, which became a game of paint-marble-hockey, and that was over quickly. :)
Check out Maggie, James & Erin for more projects!
